Crime Stoppers Month 2022
Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers is in our 35th year of helping the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna and Lake Country stay safe. Crime Stoppers month is the time we take the opportunity to tell our stakeholders how much we appreciate them and to publicly showcase the successes we have seen.
Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers is a partnership comprised of a board of volunteer directors who set policies, raise funds and community awareness. The program itself is run by two full time security cleared staff members employed by the Regional District of Central Okanagan. Crime Stoppers has other partners: the community, the media and the RCMP.
While Covid has kept us from getting out and about in the community as much as we usually do, we still have a few successes to share from 2021. We held our super successful annual community shred day on May 15th and raised over $9,000.00. We shredded 942 boxes of paper weighing 11,370 kgs and cannot thank Paul and Stephanie from Okanagan Paper Shredding enough for their long hours and support! Look for our next shredding fundraiser on May 28, 2022.
In November 2021 we received the Crime Stoppers International Productivity Award for the large amount of property we helped RCMP to recover in 2020. $837,000 of drugs, property and cash were recovered due to tips from the community. That’s something to be proud of!
Phone tips are received from the public by calling our 1-800-222-8477 line, which is handled by a secure call centre. Your calls are not traceable, and completely anonymous. Alternately, tips can be submitted online by pressing the “SUBMIT A TIP” button on our website www.crimestoppers.net. By leaving a tip on our tip software called P3, you can easily send us updates and be communicated with. Again, this method is completely safe, and we have no way of tracing you. We don’t care who you are, we just want your information! Once we receive a tip, we forward it to the proper authorities who will use it to further an investigation. If your information helps lead to charges or an arrest, you are eligible for a cash reward. Retrieving your award is easy and anonymous. Interestingly, most of our tipsters are not looking for a reward but wish to tell someone their information and not have to appear in court.
Since our inception in 1987 we have received over 30,000 tips. We have helped to arrest nearly 3000 criminals and approved almost $325,000 in rewards. Our fundraising efforts raise money to pay these rewards to you, people in our communities.
We commit to keeping our communities and families safe in 2022. We will continue to promote the #9PM Routine, which is a movement of creating a nightly habit of checking your cars, door locks and garages every night at 9:00 p.m. to curb crimes of opportunity; thieves preying on unlocked doors. We have partnered with Project 529, an organization that encourages bike owners to register their bikes and help them find their way home when stolen. Watch for our tent at a trail near you this spring!
We continue to work with our media partners to showcase wanted suspects and unsolved crimes. We welcome your information and will continue to work with authorities to keep our communities safe. If you know something, say something!
